Here are some suggestions on things to do if you are visiting New Orleans and looking for some ideas.
We also recommend looking at Gambit Magazine’s calendar to see what events might be going on while you’re here.
-
Cemetery Tours
Ghost Tours
Swamp Tours (Airboats are loud and scare away animals, so pick a different option if you want to see any)
Riverboat Cruises (options for dinner and a jazz show)
Garden District walking tours (if you’re interested in local architecture)
-
National WWII Museum (World-class museum, plan a full day)
New Orleans Museum of Art (They have a free sculpture garden)
Mardi Gras World (Can be pricey, but a fun look at behind-the-scenes of Mardi Gras)
-
Commander’s Palace (Fine-dining, be sure to check the dress code and reservations)
Deanie’s (Cajun seafood, a favorite of the bride and where she was introduced to New Orleans cuisine)
The Bon Ton (New Orleans cuisine, close to host hotel)
The Chop House (Steak, also close to the hotel)
Domilise’s Poboys (traditional New Orleans sandwiches)
Johnny’s Poboys (Good choice for poboys if you’re in the French Quarter)
-
French Quarter is mostly very touristy shops, but lots of options for souvenirs
Hint: The big Walgreens across Canal Street from the French Quarter has many of the same trinkets for much cheaper
Frenchmen Art Bazaar (7pm to midnight or so, Thurs to Mon. Lots of local artists sell their work here)
Magazine Street (upscale boutiques with some second-hand shops and other places to get a deal. A favorite of locals.)
-
Audubon Zoo, Aquarium, and Insectarium (passes are available that let you do multiple or all three, but it’s a lot to fit in one day)
City Park
Carousel Gardens (amusement rides for just about all ages)
Storyville (playground with fairytale theme, suitable for young kids)
City Putt (Putt-putt golf)
Louisiana Children’s Museum (All new since the groom was a kid, so no personal experience, but it comes highly recommended)
These are just a few of the many options available in the city, so also consider NewOrleans.com for other ideas (but keep in mind it’s essentially advertising for the places listed).
